As recent events have underscored, observers of the 2016 race must understand the context for women. This season’s candidates follow in the footsteps of others who faced tough challenges and intense scrutiny, in part because of their gender. Candidates and practitioners will discuss  what it means to be a woman seeking the role of chief executive and commander-in-chief – what they learned about voters, the media, funders, the campaign process, and fellow candidates.

Presidential Gender Watch is a nonpartisan project of the Center for American Women and Politics (Eagleton Institute of Politics, Rutgers University) and the Barbara Lee Family Foundation to track, analyze, and illuminate gender dynamics in the 2016 presidential election. It draws upon the research and expertise of both partner organizations, as well as other experts, to further public understanding of how gender influences candidate strategy, voter engagement and expectations, media coverage, and electoral outcomes in the race for the nation’s highest executive office. Our goal is to lend expert analysis to the dialogue around gender throughout the election season.
