Results for Women in the June 25th Primaries in Colorado, New York, and Utah

LAST UPDATED 8.14.24 (7:30am): Primary elections were held on Tuesday in three states: Colorado, New York, and Utah. Runoff elections were also held in South Carolina (find those results incorporated into the complete South Carolina results here). Colorado

 U.S. House

All 4 (3D, 1R) women U.S. House incumbents from Colorado are nominees for re-election in November, though U.S. Representative Lauren Boebert (R) is running in a new district (CO-04) that strongly favors Republicans. U.S. Representative Yadira Caraveo (D) is running for re-election in a district currently rated as a toss up by Cook Political Report

New York

U.S. Senate  

In New York, incumbent U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand (D) is strongly favored to win re-election this year. New York’s U.S. Senate delegation has been 50% female since 2001. 

U.S. House

All 7 (4D, 3R) women U.S. House incumbents from New York are strongly favored to win re-election in November, including three who are running in all-woman general election contests. Two (1D, 1R) non-incumbent women U.S. House nominees are in contests currently considered competitive.

  • Democratic nominee and former Hempstead Town Supervisor Laura Gillen (D) will challenge incumbent Representative Anthony D’Esposito (R) in a contest currently rated as a toss up by Cook Political Report. In 2022, D’Esposito defeated Gillen by 3.6 points. 
  • Republican nominee Alison Esposito (R) will challenge incumbent Representative Pat Ryan (D) in a contest currently rated as “Lean Democrat” by Cook Political Report. In 2022, Esposito was the Republican nominee for lieutenant governor. 

Utah

U.S. Senate

In Utah, Caroline Gleich (D) will run against John Curtis (R) in an open-seat U.S. Senate contest currently rated as “Solid Republican” by Cook Political Report. No woman has served in the U.S. Senate from Utah.

U.S. House

Incumbent U.S. Representative Celeste Maloy (R) narrowly won her primary to advance to a general election in which she is strongly favored to win re-election. One (1D) more woman is a Democratic nominee in a general election contest that strongly favors Republicans.

Historic Statewide Executive

In Utah, November’s ballots will feature all-women contests for auditor and lieutenant governor, all but assuring that the state will elect its first woman auditor. Incumbent Lieutenant Governor Deidre Harrison (R) is seeking re-election. 

South Carolina

U.S. House

In South Carolina, Sheri Biggs (R) won a runoff election to become the Republican nominee in an open-seat U.S. House contest (SC-03) that strongly favors Republicans. With this win, South Carolina could increase its representation of women in Congress by one.

In addition to the regular cycle primary contests held on Tuesday, a special election was held to fill the vacancy in Colorado’s 4th Congressional District. Democratic nominee Trisha Calvarese (D) was defeated. 

Women Nominees in 2024: Based on primary election results, women are 6 of 16 (37.5%) major-party nominees for U.S. House in Colorado, including 5 of 8 (62.5%) Democrats and 1 of 8 (12.5%) Republicans. 

The current number of women major-party nominees for the U.S. House matches the previous high (6), first set in 2022. One (1R) woman House candidate was unsuccessful. Of the 6 (5D, 1R) women nominees for U.S. House in Colorado: 4 (3D, 1R) are incumbents, 1 (1D) is a challenger, and 1 (1D) is running for an open seat. Incumbent U.S. Representative Lauren Boebert (R) is running in a new district.
