Primary elections were held on Tuesday in three states: Colorado, New York, and Utah. Runoff elections were also held in South Carolina (find those results incorporated into the complete South Carolina results here). Full results for women in these races are available on this post on our Election Analysis page; there are two undecided races with women candidates in Colorado and Utah. The full results post will update as these contests are decided.
Among the most notable results for women:
- All 4 (3D, 1R) women U.S. House incumbents from Colorado are nominees for re-election in November, though U.S. Representative Lauren Boebert (R) is running in a new district (CO-04) that strongly favors Republicans. U.S. Representative Yadira Caraveo (D) is running for re-election in a district currently rated as a toss up by Cook Political Report.
- In New York, incumbent U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand (D) is strongly favored to win re-election this year. New York’s U.S. Senate delegation has been 50% female since 2001.
- All 7 (4D, 3R) women U.S. House incumbents from New York are strongly favored to win re-election in November, including three who are running in all-woman general election contests. Two (1D, 1R) non-incumbent women U.S. House nominees are in contests currently considered competitive.
- Democratic nominee and former Hempstead Town Supervisor Laura Gillen (D) will challenge incumbent Representative Anthony D’Esposito (R) in a contest currently rated as a toss up by Cook Political Report. In 2022, D’Esposito defeated Gillen by 3.6 points.
- Republican nominee Alison Esposito (R) will challenge incumbent Representative Pat Ryan (D) in a contest currently rated as “Lean Democrat” by Cook Political Report. In 2022, Esposito was the Republican nominee for lieutenant governor.
- In Utah, Caroline Gleich (D) will run against John Curtis (R) in an open-seat U.S. Senate contest currently rated as “Solid Republican” by Cook Political Report. No woman has served in the U.S. Senate from Utah.
- Incumbent U.S. Representative Celeste Maloy (R), Utah’s sole woman in Congress, is in a Republican primary contest that remains too close to call. One (1D) more woman is a Democratic nominee in a general election contest that strongly favors Republicans.
- In Utah, November’s ballots will feature all-women contests for auditor and lieutenant governor, all but assuring that the state will elect its first woman auditor. Incumbent Lieutenant Governor Deidre Harrison (R) is seeking re-election.
- In South Carolina, Sheri Biggs (R) won a runoff election to become the Republican nominee in an open-seat U.S. House contest (SC-03) that strongly favors Republicans. With this win, South Carolina could increase its representation of women in Congress by one.
